Toray Industries has developed a new variety of Ultrasuede nu which partially consists of plant-based polyester and All Nippon Airways will adopt it for the headrest covers in its ANA Green Jet from November.
Ultrasuede nu consists of a nonwoven base material given a special resin treatment for a genuine leather appearance. The ultra-fine fibres on its surface are 100% plant-based polyester made of ethylene glycol from sugarcane molasses byproducts and dimethyl terephthalate from corn starch. Approximately 30% plant-based polyurethane is used inside the nonwoven structure made with polyol from castor oil plant. The scrim is also composed of about 30% plant-based polyester made from ethylene glycol from sugarcane molasses byproducts.
The product has a delicate texture and suppleness reminiscent of premium aniline leather and is light, comfortable and breathable.
